"1970s
Boogie Night" My
homage to those halycon gay disco nights of the 1970s. This might be considered
as a presentation/gift to younger generations as to the way things once
were. An imaginary gay disco on a busy weekend night though it can
be any disco you imagine it to be. The DJ has placed a couple of album
covers on display (Vickie Sue Robinson & Thelma Houston) at the DJ
booth to give you an idea what sort of music is being played. Thought
of putting more figures in the DJ booth since DJs always seemed to have
groupies, but for composition sake limited it to two figures. Just put
on some classic disco and let the image take you on a trip back in time.

create this painting, I used photos I took at the Denver No On 8 protest
in October 2009. The image is relatively faithful to my photos depicting
a scene of the marchers on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver. However,
the numerous light poles, trees, planters and trash receptacles got in
the way in some of the photos, so for this view I simply removed those
objects. An attention getting, highly detailed and colorful image.

painting depicts the Wreck Room, a popular Milwaukee gay men's bar in
the 1970s and 80s. The image was rendered from my personal photos
and memories. The scene depicts a winter's night outside of the
Wreck Room which existed on a triangle spot of land bounded by Erie, Menomonee
and Broadway, just south of Downtown next to the Milwaukee River. It was
located near two other gay bars, the legendary Factory bar and M&Ms
lounge. The interior of the Wreck Room had a rustic and funky interior
with pool tables pinball machines and barrels of free peanuts in the shell.
The bare wood floors had the crunchy sound of peanut shells underfoot.
At one time, the bar had the front end of a 50's Thunderbird car sticking
out of one wall so that patrons could sit on the hood of the car instead
of a bar stool. The reason some of the men in the painting are not
wearing coats outside in the cold air was that some bar goers would prefer
to leave their coats in their cars rather than having them pick up the
cigarette smoke smell from smoky bars. I've hand printed the Wreck
Room name on the painting to add an immediate provenance to the image. Original painting is signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authentication. |
